First there were Anzac's. But what is an Ort?

Those of you with a keen eye will see that the TECHAPP Intakes have received a mascot thanks to the imitable Barry Jacka. We have been having some conversation regarding the origins of the TECHAPP nicknames. I recon that the drugs must have gotten a lot stronger between my intake 1973 and the start of the TECHAPPs in 1984. Either that or magic mushrooms had started growing around the accommodation blocks. So for your ongoing edification I present some of the meanings of those nicknames.

Dryad - (in folklore and Greek mythology) a nymph inhabiting a tree or wood.

Now I don't know about you but nymps have never looked like this in my dreams. But it is quite apt. Green behind the ears!

Excors (genitive excordis); third-declension one-termination adjective. senseless, silly, stupid.

This would appear at first sight to be the perfect example of a derogatory name for a junior intake. And I for one like it!

'Ort' - a food scrap - a rectum

Now on the derogatory scale this probable takes first prize. Barry is working on this one and we will have to see what he has in store for the 'Rectums'?

I would like to thank Barry Jacka for his marvelous caricatures. It makes this place interesting...
